Metalworking for Interior Design
Metal has always been at the heart of our work. For over thirty years, Formal has been transforming sheets, profiles and metal tubes into high-quality furnishings, putting proven experience and advanced technology at the service of our partners. Our specialization in metalworking for interiors allows us to handle projects of any complexity, from large production runs to the most refined bespoke pieces.
Mastery in working with every type of metal
Our know-how covers the full range of metals used in interior design. We process ferrous alloys such as carbon steel and stainless steels AISI 304 and 316, applying the most suitable techniques for each material. Non-ferrous alloys such as aluminium, brass and bronze are treated with the same care, enhancing their individual characteristics to achieve the best combination of aesthetics and performance.
We know metals in depth: their mechanical properties, how they react to different processes, and their expressive potential in design. This expertise allows us to recommend the most suitable material for each application, taking into account structural strength, weight, corrosion resistance, workability and, of course, the available budget.
Advanced technology and craftsmanship
Our strength lies in the balance between cutting-edge machinery and skilled craftsmanship. We use latest-generation CNC systems for laser cutting, plasma cutting, punching and bending. These technologies guarantee millimetric precision, repeatability in series production and the possibility to create complex geometries that would be impossible with manual processes alone.
Technology, however, is only part of the story. Programming machines, interpreting technical drawings, choosing the correct processing parameters and, above all, perfecting final finishes all require human experience. Our operators, trained over more than thirty years of activity, understand how metal behaves, anticipate its reactions and intervene with the precise, expert touch of an artisan whenever it is needed.
Precision cutting and forming
Our laser cutting systems allow us to process sheets of different thicknesses with clean edges and tight dimensional tolerances. We can produce complex shapes, precise holes and decorative patterns that become distinctive elements of the finished furniture.
For thicker materials, plasma cutting offers speed and efficiency in industrial production, while still ensuring high-quality results.
Bending is one of the most delicate stages. Using CNC press brakes, we achieve accurate, repeatable angles that are essential when assembling complex structures. Our experience enables us to calculate bend allowances, compensate for material springback and produce components that fit together perfectly.
When curved shapes are required, we use rolling to create circular and curved profiles: from table legs and frames to tubular structures for chairs and accessories. The radius of curvature is controlled with precision to ensure consistent results in serial production.
High-level welding
Welding is the process that turns separate components into solid, long-lasting structures. Our certified welders use different techniques depending on the material and application: TIG welding for stainless steels and aluminium alloys when maximum precision and flawless finishes are needed, and MIG welding for faster production while maintaining excellent quality.
Each weld follows standardized procedures that ensure structural strength and consistent appearance. For furniture with visible welds, we dedicate particular attention to their finish: beads are ground and polished until they become almost invisible or are deliberately emphasized as part of the design language.
Complementary machining operations
In addition to primary processes, we perform a wide range of machining operations to complete each component: drilling, tapping, milling and turning. Our machining centres allow multi-axis operations, which are essential for complex joints, housings for moving parts and precision details.
Deburring and grinding make edges safe and surfaces perfectly flat. Surface grinding and sanding prepare parts for subsequent treatments or create specific decorative effects. Every processing step is functional to the final result and contributes to the overall quality of the product.
Surface treatments and finishes
Surface finishes transform raw metal into sophisticated design elements. We offer a wide selection of treatments, carried out in-house or in collaboration with trusted partners.
Powder coating is the most versatile solution: available in countless RAL colours, it guarantees excellent resistance to wear and weathering. We apply specific primers to ensure optimal adhesion and use curing ovens that provide uniform and durable coatings.
Chrome plating and related galvanic treatments add mirror-like brilliance and corrosion protection. We produce both bright and satin chrome, as well as decorative nickel and zinc finishes. For stainless steel, we offer directional or circular satin finishes, mirror polishing and brushed effects for a more material, tactile look.
For aluminium, anodizing and other oxidation processes deliver long-lasting colours and surface protection. Special galvanic coatings such as bronze, brass-like finishes and PVD treatments provide refined solutions for high-end projects.
Assembly and quality control
All processed components converge in the assembly phase, where the structure takes its final form. We assemble using various methods depending on the project: welding, riveting, structural bonding and bolted joints. The choice of technique is influenced by aesthetic requirements, mechanical performance and the need for future disassembly or maintenance.
During assembly we carry out final dimensional checks, verifying that tolerances are respected and that every part fits together flawlessly. We also test structural stability, flatness of surfaces and the correct operation of any mechanisms or moving elements.
Versatility across multiple sectors
Our experience in metalworking for interiors covers many sectors. We manufacture structures for contract furniture (hotels, restaurants, offices), components and complements for naval interiors, outdoor furniture, elements for retail and commercial spaces, and bespoke pieces for residential design.
This versatility is based on solid core skills: mastering metalworking means being able to adapt to any application. Each sector has its own specific requirements, but excellent workmanship remains the common foundation in every project.
From prototypes to large-scale production
We manage both one-off prototypes and large-scale series with the same level of care. In the prototyping stage we use our experience to solve technical issues, refine details and optimize processes in view of future production. For high-volume orders we guarantee repeatability, consistent quality and respect of agreed lead times.
This production flexibility is made possible by the organization of our team, the diversity of our machinery and standardized workflows that ensure efficiency without sacrificing quality.
A technical partner for designers and companies
Formal is much more than a subcontractor that simply executes drawings. We act as a technical partner, actively collaborating in the development of each project. When a designer or company comes to us with an idea, we do not limit ourselves to accepting or refusing it: we analyze the technical solutions, propose alternatives and suggest optimizations.
This ability to engage in technical dialogue is the result of decades of experience dealing with every type of challenge in metalworking. For our partners, it means having an ally who contributes to the success of the project, transforming creative visions into high-quality, tangible furnishings.
